West Village Roof Terrace
New York, NY
This client wanted to create a roof terrace that would not only improve his use of the space, but could be flexible enough so that if he rented the apartment, prospective tenants would see the value of the outdoor space. Large mechanical equipment for the spaces below caused the program to include a great deal of screening. These screening elements became perfect design tools to create more intimate spaces to balance the larger dining and seating areas.
The client’s South Asian heritage had already influenced the décor for the apartment’s interior, so we built upon that idea in the design for the terrace landscape. We designed the planting and the central water feature to capture the spirit of his heritage. We also provided protection from the summer heat in the form of an arbor centered along the main axis of the design.
